Future School Therapy Dogs: Their Journey to Canine Good Citizen Titles

By michael burkey

In a heartwarming display of dedication and partnership, six prospective therapy dogs from the Berkley School system took a significant step forward in their journey on April 11 and 18, 2024. These canine companions underwent training to earn their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) titles at Michigan Dog Training (MDT) located in Plymouth, Michigan under the guidance of MDT’s CEO, Michael Burkey.

This accomplishment not only highlights the potential of these furry friends but also underscores the importance of therapy animals in enhancing the students’ well-being.  The successful CGC dog teams are:  Amanda Brzezinski and Beatrice, a Husky mix; Tracy Francis and Yuki, Golden Retriever; Pam Henry and Parker, Golden Retriever; Kathy Millia and Samson, Labrador Retriever; Ben Moy and Korra, Newfound; and Hayley Pawson and Millie, Labrador Retriever.

The Berkley School’s initiative to train therapy dogs signifies a progressive approach towards holistic support in educational environments. Therapy dogs have proven instrumental in reducing stress and anxiety levels among students, fostering a conducive atmosphere for learning and personal growth. By investing in the training of these furry companions, the Berkley School demonstrates its commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also emotional well-being.

Under Burkey’s expert guidance, the journey towards earning the CGC title is a structured and enriching experience. Burkey’s expertise and passion for canine training ensure that each dog and their handler receives personalized attention and instruction tailored to their unique personalities and needs. Through positive reinforcement techniques and patience, Burkey cultivates a trusting bond between the dogs and their handlers, paving the way for success in the CGC evaluation.

The Canine Good Citizen program, established by the American Kennel Club, sets a benchmark for responsible pet ownership and well-mannered behavior in dogs. To earn the CGC title, dogs must demonstrate proficiency in various obedience exercises, including walking on a loose leash, sitting politely for petting, and coming when called, among others. Additionally, dogs must exhibit confidence and composure in real-world scenarios, such as encountering strangers and other dogs.

The successful completion of the CGC evaluation by the six therapy dogs from Berkley School is a testament to their resilience, intelligence, and the dedication of their handlers. Through consistent training and unwavering support, these dogs have showcased their readiness to serve as ambassadors of comfort and companionship in educational settings and beyond. Prior to graduating from the School Therapy Training Program, these dogs will progress to completing AKC’s Advanced Canine Good Citizen and Urban Canine Good Citizen titles.

Beyond the tangible benefits of therapy dog programs, such as stress reduction and improved social interactions, the presence of these furry companions fosters a sense of community and empathy. Their unconditional love and non-judgmental nature create an inclusive environment where students feel accepted and valued.

As we celebrate the achievement of these six future therapy dogs from Berkley School, let us also recognize the profound impact they will have on the lives of those they encounter. Whether providing comfort to students during exams, offering solace to students facing adversity, or simply spreading joy with their wagging tails, these canine companions embody the essence of unconditional love and compassion.

In conclusion, the journey of these six therapy dogs towards earning their Canine Good Citizen titles is a poignant reminder of the transformative power of human-animal bonds. Through dedication, training, and a shared commitment to making a positive difference, Berkley School, under Burkey’s guidance  is shaping a future where therapy dogs play an integral role in promoting well-being and enriching lives.
